I am using the gmail app because it gets push mail but I'm thinking does this really matter I can just go into mail and sync it...instead of wasting battery for push mail

This morning I decided to delete the Gmail app and go back to Mail.

Whether it's a waste depends on several things. Push can be more efficient than pull depending on the polling intervals. As stated above, the built in mail client and push with gmail aren't mutually exclusive (and haven't been for a long time).
