guys - how do I allow gmail sound notifications to come through even in dnd mode at night

Don’t think you can. You can do texts and phone calls within the settings under the DND menu. Or there is a new feature that you can allow specific contacts “emergency bypass” option.

Just a question why would you want to let emails thru? That’s like defeating the purpose of DND....that would be something you wouldn’t want to be bothered with unless there is an emergency call from so and so that you need to get thru

May not be able to do that either. But if you put the gmail into you’re regular mail then you can change the notification tone

If Gmail doesn't offer that (and many/most apps don't) then you can't change it, assuming we are talking about the actual Gmail app (rather than using a Gmail mail account in the regular Mail app that Apple provides in iOS).
