Gmail-specific choppy scrolling in Safari, not in Firefox

Little thing I noticed. Am thinking of switching from iCloud back to Gmail, or to Outlook.com. Seems that using Safari in Gmail results in fairly choppy scrolling through bodies of messages. Firefox, on the same message, does not do this. Nice and smooth.

Scrolling behavior on Outlook.com is great.

Safari / Mavericks is fully up-to-date -- 7.0.4 on 10.9.3 as of now. Firefox is also fully up-to-date. Tried disabling Safari extensions to no avail. Hardware is admittedly a little old -- mid-2009 MacBook Pro.

Any thoughts? Just curious as to why and what can be done to polish this a bit, if anything.

This problem exists on a brand new macbook pro 15".

I'm going to return this computer tomorrow as it is just so laggy.

It's a Gmail thing though. Not the laptop.
