Gmail storage full - how to delete from apple mail?

I've just found out that my Gmail storage is full and I need to go through and do lots of deleting. I use Apple Mail (for os 10.8.5) for all of my emailing currently. Most of my large emails are those that I've sent to clients with big file attachments. If I went into gmail and deleted them, would they then get deleted on my mail program? It's good to have records of all of the emails I've sent to clients, even if I don't need them anymore. So I want to make sure that they stay right where they are in my desktop mail program. Thoughts?

wrong section. this is for iOS not OS X

but Gmail uses IMAP so unless you save them somewhere else (or switch to something that uses POP), deleting them anywhere in Gmail will delete them everywhere no matter what.
