Google has a plugin for voice and video chat that can be used from within GMail. This is like Google talk, but it runs from within the GMail window instead of as a separate application. It is available here. The plugin is available for both Mac and PC.

The problem: Yesterday I tried using this to chat with a friend who has a PC. Voice worked fine, but I couldn't figure out a way to activate the video (my Macbook has a built in iSight). Has anybody gotten video to work using the GMail videochat plugin? Thanks in advance.

Does the other person also have a webcam? I had the same problem and I think it was because the other person didn't have a webcam.

Why don't you use gtalk over iChat?

I know is not what you wanted to do (you wanted it on the same browser window than gmail), but I've used the videochat trough my Macbook built-in iSight with gTalk over iChat.

It works flawlessly.
