in my Macintosh HD folder, i noticed there was a new file, "gmon.out"

it just appeared today. does anyone know what this is from and how it got here? and can i delete it?

That's a gprof file, it will contain some statistics on what a running program was doing. If you didn't intentionally profile a progrm, I can't imagine that the information (or the file) would be of any use to you.

gmon.out

have you recently installed any new applications. MacTheRipper or Handbrake for instance. I know I had this same file show when I installed these apps. It doesn't affect their performance to delete the file. It will be created when ever you run the apps.
