im thinking going for the x instead of the newer models as the price will drop a lot on the x and it’s not a huge upgrade in specs too. i don’t want the bigger screens either.

Do it. A used X or new 7 have the best values for your money now. Especially when iOS 12 is running on them.
 
I’m keeping my X. Nothing in these new phones separate them enough. Someone on offered up selling app listed the 256gb x for 700. Good deal if you can get it.

I'm also really considering to buy an X. I'm pretty sure I can find a used X for around 600$ in a few months, that's basically half of what an Xs costs.

I have seen it drop all the way down to $599 for a fair AT&T model on Swappa. Between now and October 19th will be pretty telling since I rather get the X for $500-$600 than pay $750 for the iPhone XR.

Don’t get fair. Pay a bit more for a mint model wit some Apple care left on it.
