Going Abroad

I live in the US, we have Verizon Iphone 4 and 4S. Will these work in Europe? I realize I may neeed to get a plan for calling but the phones will work?

4 will not. 4s will. call verizon and have them unlock 4s for international travel so you can use local sim card

If you have/use Google Voice (or go ahead and sign up for it) you should be able to use the Talkatone app on the iPhone to make (and I believe receive) calls using Google Voice via WiFi. And you can use it (essentially Google Voice) for text messaging as well.

As I understand it, the 4S has both GSM and CDMA chips inside, so yes, it'll work as long as it's unlocked. Just get a local SIM while you're abroad.

The Verizon 4 won't work outside the US though.
