going from 2012 15in to new retina 13' ?

is that even an upgrade ? i loose the graphics card but i go up to 8gb ram from 4, and an sad from a slow hdd. i do not like how my 15 inch macbook is so large, has a useless CD drive, but worst of all lags ANYWAY, i opened up arpeture today and saw the beach ball after every edit. it seems like i5 and i7 on MacBooks mean nothing when in actual use. any suggestions ? i want to get something lighter but i don't know if thats a legit upgrade or not
