Going to Europe with unlocked Verizon 4S

I have been told by Global Services that they unlocked my phone. How do I check this? Also, other than buying a sim in Europe, do I need to connect to iTunes to make it work or just put in new sim and then good to go? Thanks
 
Try putting a SIM in your phone to make sure it's unlocked, but as far as I know it's not required to connect it to iTunes with a new SIM. You do have to connect with iTunes at least once to really unlock your phone.
