In the past I've traded in every two years. Then the first iPhone SE came along and I kept it four years, and expected to do the same with the iPhone SE 2020. But I went ahead an upgraded to the iPhone 13 mini at the beginning of the year.

At the time, I was wavering between the 13 mini and the 13 pro, for the better camera. But threads I found here and elsewhere convinced me that there was something amiss with the way the pro processed telephoto images, and I simulated the weight of the pro by taping a heavy coin to the back of my SE's case. In the end I decided on the mini.

I'm not running out to buy a 14 pro immediately. There will be some time to evaluate if the processing issues are fixed, and time to determine if it's worth it for me. BUT...I expect I will find myself by mid-year next year going through the process again of weighing the option of upgrading from my 13 mini to the 14 pro. I'm not really happy about it: I would prefer to ride out a few years yet. The mini is a great phone. I determined that the things that separated the 13 pro from the 13 mini were not worth the tradeoffs. But those potential benefits hit me right in the sweet spot, and I'm sure I will find myself thinking hard about it.
