Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference is kicking off next Monday, and starting later this week, developers who have been invited to attend in person will be catching flights to get to Cupertino, California.

Developer Ryan Jones today announced the launch of a useful flight tracking tool for those who are attending, which is available through the Flighty flight tracking app. WWDC attendees can add their flights to the Flighty WWDC 2023 website to see other developers who will be flying in from the same airports and who may be on the same flights.

Dates are not shared, nor are flight numbers and airlines, but developers can add their names to see who else is coming to and from their local airports. The site also provides a look at interesting aggregate data, such as the number of countries developers are flying from, which airports, the distance traveled, and more.

A map view shows all of the incoming flights at a glance, and clicking into a location displays the developers coming from that area. The tool is free to use, and available through the Flighty website.

Flighty is a robust flight tracking app that offers up all of the flight information that you need ahead of a trip. It provides quick notifications of any changes, alerts you to possible delays based on late inbound planes, and provides at-a-glance information on departure/arrival times, gate numbers, baggage claim locations, and more.

Flighty is free to download, but unlocking all features requires a Pro subscription. [Direct Link]

I love Flightly and the abundance of data all in one place, along with history is really nice. I can see the tail number for the plane, incoming route, on time performance, it even updates the map when a flight plan is filed. Also the live tracking website is super handy for sending to family, friends or anyone else to know where you are in your journey.

I just wish they would introduce a watch app already or at least some complications... Such a rich app with no watch integration feels like a miss.

Apple developers: "We value privacy!"

Apple developers going to WDCC: "Let's share our flight information with anyone who wants to see it!"

🤣

(Yes, I'm just being silly with what I wrote above. And yes, I did read the article, which indicates that "dates are not shared, nor are flight numbers and airlines." I just personally find it a bit odd.)

As someone who doesn't really have much of a social life and not a lot of friends, this makes me kinda jealous. Must be nice being a developer and getting to go to Apple Park to do developer things. I guess I can take heart in that my main social gathering is happening in August.

Wait so ppl can fly in internationally but Apple still isn't going back to a full in-person event like pre-2020? Is it still a COVID thing, or have they just ditched totally live presentations all together?
The latter. They’ve made clear that they prefer the recorded format. I don’t think they’ve formally shut the door forever on live events, but this seems to be a balance that works well for them. They can get their message across cleanly without the risk of any “live TV” woes, any developer anywhere can access WWDC for free (with their Apple Developer Program membership) instead of having to pay $1600 for a ticket (which they might or might not get at all) plus hundreds more in travel and lodging, while they’re still able to make available a hands-on area for folks there in person.

I was thinking the same thing. A little creepy to me. 😬

Would be nice to see an expansion of the “Find my Friends” feature where you could turn On & Off a public display of your Contact Card & see others in your geo area that similarly have public switched on. Looking for a buddy to go do something together with? Switch it on & see who is around, toss a public or private message up quick & go. Like just the useful part of social media relevant to the real world, in a minimal-engagement ui.

For all of you chronically online people scared that everyone irl is a pedo axe murderer, this would also serve as a record of who you were with, when & where you went, which would make it a poor choice for attackers to find victims with. Hey your Apple Watch could monitor your health and tell if you’re heart is beating a little too excitedly & breathing too hard and call 911 on you. Fun way to end a date.

How is this creepy? It’s not done via automatic data scraping from somewhere. Attendees need to input their own flight data on the app to AND choose to email the info to the flighty to be shown at all.
