Here is how the US record industry works:

Gold: 500,000 units
Platinum: 1,000,000 units
Diamond: 10,000,000 units

What do you think is the app store equivalent? How much does a "hit" app move in a year?

The App store front page Top 10 Top Free apps are reported to do well over 10K downloads per day.

The front page Top 10 Top Paid apps are likely doing well over 1k downloads per day. Not sure how long on average an app stays up that high on the Top lists, but that can be well over 1 million downloads for a long term top free app, and a daily run rate of over $1M/annum in developer revenue for any top 10 Top Paid app over $2.99.

But it's a hit business. There's a vast difference between to top and bottom of the App store.

I have 1 app, above the bottom quartile in ranking, that gets maybe a couple purchases per month. There are over 25,000 apps below the bottom quartile today.

I was thinking more of the paid apps.

Maybe you could also think of the awards in terms of gross:

Gold: 50,000 USD
Platinum: 100,000 USD
Diamond: 1,000,000 USD
