'Golden Girls' actress Rue McClanahan dies

Rue McClanahan, the Emmy-winning actress who brought the sexually liberated Southern belle Blanche Devereaux to life on the hit TV series "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 76.

Her manager Barbara Lawrence said McClanahan died Thursday at 1 a.m. of a stroke.

She had undergone treatment for breast cancer in 1997 and later lectured to cancer support groups on "aging gracefully." In 2009, she had heart bypass surgery.

Aww..so sad. She was great.

Well this just sucks. Hopefully she passed without pain. She along with all of the Golden Girls are/were hilarious. All I can say is that I hope Betty will be around for awhile still.

Betty is awesome. She's in a new sitcom on TV Land starting soon.

Mary Tyler Moore Show wrote the book on sitcom writing for an ensemble. Was also some of Betty White's best work.

RIP...... Only one left from the show..... I always liked her the best too... What is weird is me and the wife were just talking about this yesterday. Betty White was on and the GG came up. We couldn't remember the name of Rue's character's name on the show.

Yes. Estelle was the youngest of the entire cast. I believe Betty was the oldest.

Not likely since Estelle was nearly 85 when she died two years ago. Rue was 76 when she died.

I stand corrected. I thought I remembered reading that she was the youngest of the cast about 10 or so years ago when I saw the series again.

I think the bit of trivia was that Estelle Getty (Sophia) was younger than Bea Arthur (Sophia's daughter, Dorothy).
