is there a much cheaper alternative to iPad Air for reading and browsing?

seems like, all are within a 100-200 range.

There ARE much cheaper tablets, but they are typically found in discount and drug stores (walgreens, etc.) and are sorely underpowered and under-spec'd. Meaning, not good at all.

There's also the Kindle Fire HDX, but it's basically an Android tablet that is severely limited to work only within Amazon's confines.

the kindle 8.9 hdx cost 100 less than the ipad air?

if I were you I'd go for an iPad 2, the hardware is still supported and if you pounce all over eBay you may be able to find an affordable deal in your price range.
