I was planning to order a new MacPro with a 24" ACD, but somebody alerted me to the issue of the cables only being 1 meter long. This wouldn't work for me with my office setup, so I'm looking for a good alternative.

And if anyone has any insight as to why Apple would design a display around a notebook computer rather than their "pro" desktop line, I'd love to know the reasoning. Is there a refresh on the way? Or do they expect MacPro users to use the 30" display?

I'd wait till WWDC if possible - Cinema Displays might receive a small update.. nothing rumoured but never know.

A number of us here jumped on the NEW Dell IPS 22" Monitor 2209WA

And over at [H]ardForum some bought two each of the 2209WAs from the refurb store for under $400.00.

2 each 22" 2209WA @ Total Cost of $384.00

These are built with the new e-IPS panel not cheapo TN panels.

Dell 2408wfp.. so many inputs, good panel (no LED back lighting however)

Thanks for all the advice.

Even though I'm ready to buy the Mac Pro now, I'll hold off until WWDC to see if they fill this gaping hole in their display lineup. And if they don't, I'll pull the trigger on the tower and get a display from Dell or Samsung.
