I bought an Airport Extreme, connected my Time Machine USB external disk to it, and then found - like a lot of other people it seems - that TM won't use the existing backups and wants to start again creating a sparse bundle and that this setup isn't officially supported by Apple anyway.

Unfortunately by the time I discovered this it was past the 14 days so I couldn't return the AEBS and get a Time Capsule (although I've read lots of things about corrupted TM backups using TC)

So, what would people recommend as a good reliable backup program for wireless backups? Are there any 3rd party programs that will be able to use or import my existing TM backups?

Apple really should get this sorted. At the iPad launch SJ said, "Apple is a mobile devices company" which, by definition means they are a wireless devices company so should be able to provide a reliable wireless backup system.
