My mba from 2014 bit the dust so I wanted to find something to use while I wait for the new mbp with the new keyboards to come in the 13 or 14” size. I ended up looking at the 2015s since it’s the last year of the old keyboard , and bought a used one :

MacBook Pro 15 Mid 2015 I7 2.5ghz,16gb,512gb ssd, AMD R9M370x

Has 143 battery cycles. Bought for 700. Is this a good deal?

I think it is!

I personally don't recommend a 2015 MBP in 2020 (I have one and love it, but is old tech).

But for that price is a good deal, I thin you could sell it for the same price in a few month when the new 13 or 14 comes out.

With the caveat that battery cycles don't really tell you the full story, I'd say it was a pretty good find for $700 assuming it was in very good condition. I was recently in the market for a new laptop for my wife and a 2015 was one option I was looking at. $800 was the upper limit I set for what I would be willing to pay for a 2015.

yeah i know it's a relatively old device, I just kind of figured that well it's still a huge upgrade over a base model 13'' MBA 2014. I'm not a fan of the butterfly keyboards at all, and the 16'' MBP right now is a little more than I want to spend right now. So I figured the 2015 is about the best of both worlds for now.

I paid $1,100 for one of these January 2019. But the price has dropped quite a bit since the 16 came out. I think that you got a good deal. You can always wait for a better one but, if you need something now, then you might as well pull the trigger. Performance should be really great compared to your MBA.

Thank you. Yeah I think the 512gb of storage and the dedicated gpu is what sold me. I’m not a heavy user but the extra performance and storage made me feel like I could pull the trigger. Trying to get around 2 years more out of it.

I got ten years out of my 2008 MacBook Pro so I generally expect ten years out of these systems.

You will probably like the better cooling too. I also have a 13 inch 2015 MBP (3.1 Ghz, 16 GB, 512 GB) and the fans come on a lot sooner at a lower load. I leave a 512 GB SD card in mine for extra storage that's always there. I use the 2015 15 mainly for work and have a 2014 15 for personal stuff. It means that I have a backup should one get lost, stolen or damaged.

yeah i also read that the drive speeds are improved on the 2015 mpb vs the 2014 mbp. So it will feel faster, i imagine faster than my old 2014 macbook air.

You did fine, particularly if it's in excellent condition.

thank you i appreciate the feedback from everyone.....not sure how to value these older macbook pros. Hope this will do the job for a few years, maybe this year i'll look at the rumored new 13 or 14'' macbook pro since it should have the improved scissor keyboard.
