Good External Monitors/Substitute for TB display

Hey guys, i'm looking into getting a new external display for my retina macbook pro. I'm sure the thunderbolt display is excellent, but it's just so expensive. Can anybody recommend something a bit cheaper which will still have good quality?

I hear good things about the Dell Ultrasharp range.

NEC also has a 27" IPS LED display that is comparable to the 27" Apple Cinema Display.
