Good freeware Microsoft word-like program?

Well, if TextEdit isn't good enough, try NeoOffice/J.

Second vote for AbiWord. It's much better than NeoOffice as it is a native OS X app, and runs much much faster. If you need a spreadsheet or a Presentation program, NeoOffice is the only OSS game in town though.

I also agree that TextEdit is pretty good if you just need to write a paper, spell check it and print it.

I totally agree with this, AbiWord beats NeoOfficeJ hands down on word-processing, but NeoOffice is soo good for the rest of the Office needs. Thats why I've got both
