I always used Visual Boy Advanced ( http://www.romnation.net/srv/emulators/68/gba/Visual-Boy-Advance-v1-7-4-for-Mac.html , didn't test this link, but seems good, also 1.7.4 is the latest version I think, and it works great for me on 10.6.3)
Not sure it plays gameboy games though, but it does play GBA games, so you definitely will be able to play Pokémon FireRed
