maczot.com is running a special on Involer, a basic invoice program. You can download it and try it out before buying.
Also, Money 3, a personal finance manger program has a built in invoice generator.
If you friend is a freelancer and charges hourly rates I highly recommend Billings.

invoice receipt software
well i have the same problem
i also need an invoice/receipt software, not only an excell template, but one that can keep track of payments, and due payments, and at the same time issue invoices and receipts, where i can play with the template....
what i've been finding so far only issue invoices and never receipts
i tried billings, billable, all very good but no receipts making
also checked other pos softwares too complicated and not for my type of business
so it would be great to hear some propositions

i've been using Account Edge for a while now (for my small business) and like it, but it may be a bit complex, depending on your needs.
i use it as a client data base, accounting ledgers, billing/invoicing and it has a number of other functions that go beyond what i need. it also syncs with iCal and Address Book, plus backs up to my mobile me account.
