I love sci-fi and space exploration, and would love to play some games set in space on the mac. Any suggestions? For example, are there any games a good as and in the style of Civilization but set in space? How about space exploration type games where you explore new worlds, meet new life, etc?

I'm not really into hard core shooters, but I did like Mass Effect on the PS3.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

This should fit the bill nicely. Check out the video and info on this Steam store page:

The Escape Velocity series are classic Mac space exploration games, although I believe only the last one, EV Nova, is available for OS X.

Also, if you're looking for a Civilization type game but set in space, you really should play Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. It's probably going to take a bit of effort to get it to run on a modern computer (you may have more luck getting the Windows version to run than the Mac version) but it's totally worth it. It's definitely my favorite game of this type, and unlike the rest of the Civ series it actually has interesting characters and a story. :)

You might also like the X-Com series, although I only ever managed to play the first one all the way through.

Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri for the Mac is available at GoG for $5.99.:)

I must say I really enjoyed Endless Space. It's very minimalistic.:)

You might also want to try Empire At War, which is Star Wars classic.

Other than that, the X3 series, which you can get on the Mac App Store, is pretty extensive space exploration game. Or the online MMO EVE.

FLT-Faster Than Light is a very fun spaceship simulator game.
It's not so much strategy tho, but you fly around and fight aliens and different encounters, then you get more crew members, which levels up and you get upgrades like weapons, drones, better scanners and shields.
As you go along you unlock more and more ships you can choose the next run.
The game is punishing, once you die you die.. You can however escape from battles if you are about to loose. I did like 10 runs on easiest difficulty before I managed to kill the boss.

You get both Mac&PC version on www.gog.com and on steam.
It's retailing for 9.99, but I picked it up on sale for 4.99 on GoG a few months back.

I would love something along the lines of the old Windows Xp game, Stars! I still run it in Parallels, but a Mac native version would be great.

Oh you forgot to mention the recent rumors about the fabled "Escape Velocity Online". You know, the legendary version of EV that gazillions of Mac indie gamers wanted for the last 12 years. I hear it's finally under development.

Oops wait... there I go spreading rumors again. On a website called MacRumors. ;)
