Because most of the 3.0 updates will be applied to lots of the phones out there, freeing up the servers for activiations and such on Friday. MUCH MUCH better than the fiasco of last year and launch year. They should do it this way from now one so that those that don't want the newest phone, can apply the update ahead of time and let the newest iPhoners activate easier (and thus reduce customer complaints, especially those new to the iPhone).
And this update downloaded and installed flawless today (because I was thinking that mid-afternoon is the worst time since EVERYONE will be hogging the bandwidth).
