Ok so i have tried a few solutions of record guitar on my iPad 2 with Garage band. I tried a standard 1/4-3.5 cable and used Garage Bands built-In amps and there not to my liking ( if you play clean, then there fine ) buy if you want metal or good rock tones, nope...
I tried iRig and it had noise and still, lacked that tone and sound for distorted tones ( once again, If you play clean your fine... )
So i would mic my guitar cab with a Blue Yetti USB mic ( you have to use a camera connection kit AND a powered USB hub ), This worked and sounded good but was a pain to hook up everything all the time and not good for late night jamming..
Well...as i was heading over to the Digitech website to search for some tones for my GSP rack unit, i noticed that there RP line of guitar and bass multi effect modelers ( RP155, RP255, RP355, RP500, RP1000) are supported on the iPad 1 and iPad 2! The can stream audio thru USB WITHOUT any need for a external powered USB HUB!
This was awesome, So i ran out and picked up a RP355 ( pretty much has the same tones as my GSP, just in a small, floorboard form ) and built a amp/preset ( not a big fan of the factory presets ) , plugged it in via USB ( had to use camera connection kit ) and BAM! No "to much power" message...It records straight into garage band via USB! and to top it off, the RP has a AUX input so you can import backing tracks and what not. ( i like to import backing tracks to GB and mix in my guitar with them but you cant import music yet into GB for the iPad ) so this feature comes in handy.
So i figure i would let all the guitarist know out here that if your looking for a multi effect/modeler unit that will work with the iPad, The Digitech RP line does work!
As stated, my GSP also worked, but i had to connect it to a powered hub and route it to the iPad 2.
( If anyone else has found any other units that work, feel free to post it here )
