just picked up my Verizon 5s device only phone through in-store pick-up...
I'm currently an AT&T customer...

1) I selected "create new account" & entered my information. Then placed my order.

2) I went to the store to "pick up" the phone. NOTE: this will sign you up for a new Verizon account. And will activate the phone.

3) The specialist will then return the device. My specialist was kind enough to call Verizon support to ensure my device is deactivated.

4) Wait 5 minutes -- this will put the phone back into the store inventory & make the phone available for sale again

5) Specialist will then ring you up for the new phone as device only

I have called a couple of Apple stores near me:

You can buy a "subsidized" phone, then return it & rebuy it at the full price.. They've been doing this all day for a majority of their in-store pickups. (one employee remarked it's annoying though).

are people opening up new lines? or upgrading their existing line and then returning it? seems like a lot of trouble if it's the later.

Open up a new line - so it doesn't mess up your current line.

Its run your credit tho bc it asks for SSN

edit...I dont have Verizon but I want the Verizon unlocked phone...if I open a new line Ill have to cancel the contract and pay ETF tho..?

Yeah, I would also like to know if it matters whether I open a new line with Verizon or upgrade my existing line?

not sure if this is true.. i tried it last week when personal pickup was available and they were not able to do this for me. I used to work at an apple store and this was considered an online purchase. When returned, it does not go to store inventory. i would say YYMV. I also take that with a grain of salt since they also claimed they were not selling their iphones device only on that day (Roosevelt Field, Garden city NY location). what a bummer too i had a 16gb Gold ATT model... sigh

I updated my original post with "instructions." My specialist called Verizon support when he was returning the phone -- he confirmed with the Verizon agent that 1) No Activation fee is charged, 2) no ETF

About to do this tomorrow, will add to the post and see how things went! I have a order placed for a Verizon iPhone 5S on 2 yr term, going to use your method and see how things play out

Had the absolute best experience possible,
- Ordered last night for "In Store Pickup" on new account through Verizon
- Paid, was told that I might have to pay deposit etc etc as I'm Canadian (So no credit check actually went through cause I had to do everything in the store as thats what the apple site told me while I was placing the order)
- got email this morning its ready
- walked into store
- told genius I would like to pay full price here and now
- He went back for 2 mins, came back with iPhone and told me the other order will be cancelled, Took my CC, I signed and walked out of the store with my full price paid Verizon Silver 5S! all within matter of 12mins total max (I was in a rush already and it just worked out perfectly)

Was I right on the money? To all the naysayers that it can't be done...or too much trouble.

Yup, I mean there was no way I was going to be able to walk into the Apple Store [those of you doubting can check other threads of people complaining about being denied full price purchase of iPhone 5S] and demand a iPhone without having one already ordered.

So those of you that are having trouble, his advise is what I do recommend.

Tried this method today but did not work. Their excuse was that if they return it, the device goes back on the shelf for the next person who wants to reserve it. The guy was nice enough to ask 3 other reps but all told him no. Only way is to get a ticket at 7AM.

It's also a great way to drop your credit score by 5-10 points. Some people are simply retarded. It's not worth instant gratification to have a hard credit hit -- for a phone.

It works, if they do not want to do it at your store, just let them "sale you the phone, and after they have open the box, tell them you want to return it, and buy it at full price, since at that point they will not be able to sell it to anyone else, they might as well resale it to you...

In the pass 10 days they have had to re sale me 2 of my phones, one because they were not paying attention and did a return on the wrong phone, so they had to re sale it to me, and the other one was for an online reservation I did for a swap.
