Is it quiet? Does it have a fan. Any other views?

I've got the 500gb version I used with Time Machine. There's no fan that I can detect. The drive itself is also quiet but it won't be the same as in the 640gb model so that won't help you much.

That is good news, just need someone with a 640 drive to confirm that there is no fan.

I've also got the 500gb model at work, and I have the 320gb and 750gb models with firewire and eSata at home. All have been very quiet and have never given any problems at all. I also have 2 of the bare WD 640gb SE16 drives in a Drobo at home and they have been working great so far (I have only had them a few weeks though).
