I was going to have some fun and register the Japanese phonetic version of one of my domains, but although I usually just use my webhost (Dreamhost) for most domains ($15 ain't the cheapest option, but management ease is worth the extra $5 or $10), they inform me that they can't handle IDNs.

Has anybody else here registered domain names with non-English characters, and if so, any recommendations for a reliable (and cheap) registrar?

I'm kind of wondering, if you just type in the Punycode version of the domain into a registrar that doesn't complain about it, will that work? Dreamhost's system correctly recognized Punycode domains that had and hadn't already been registered, giving me hope that it would work, but they say no.
