good printer App or Software

I have an older Canon MP620 Printer that I would like more flexibility with as far as printer settings. The software from Canon does not give me many options at all. I would like to be able to adjust print shades (dark to light to save ink), greyscale and so forth.

Is there a favored App or software that you guys use? thanks

That might be the problem. I do get that print dialog window and I can get to the options page but for some reason I can't change them.
