Good stealth games on Playstation?

The hd re-release of the Splinter Cell games made me wonder...what are some good stealth games on PS3 (or PS2)?

I never got into the newer Metal Gear Solids, the stories (and story-telling) were just too absurd.

I played the first Splinter Cell back in the day, and it was just too linear for me. I never had the feeling like I actually had to scout out an environment to find a way to solve a situation, but rather trial-and-error until I found the only game mechanic that works there. Are the later ones any different? The general theme/setting seems to be right up my ally...

I really enjoy playing stealth-style in Far Cry 2, sneaking through the jungle, taking out people with my dart gun without being noticed, stuff like that. Even the later tougher missions were always fun trying not to be noticed at all.

I also enjoyed the stealth missions in Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear back in the days.

Maybe I should look into the old Hitman games? Are the mission designs good for stealth lovers?

the Hitman games are definitely more complex than most other stealth games.
each levels has multiple ways of completing the level, and i always found it fun replaying levels on 'professional' difficulty trying to get the 'silent assassin' rating.
after that i really liked velvet assassin, a bit linear but a great stealth game none the less. to bad its only xbox 360 or pc. After that the tenchu series is quite good. there are heaps of the tenchu games on the ps2.

Yeah Hitman games are amazing for stealth game play. Here’s a few game's you could give a try. Rainbow 6: 1-2, Alpha Protocol. These games are pretty much stealth based but Alpha is a RPG also but its still pretty impressive for an old game or so to say.

This is a easy question - Assassins creed2 and Batman:Arkham Asylum,those are pure stealth games.

Is there really a lot of opportunities for stealth gameplay in AC2? Cause I didn't feel like there was in the first one, but the second one seems to be a much better game.

There is alot of stealth in AC2 (blending in the crowd,jumping ontop of roofs to avoid the enemy) plus AC2 is better than the first.I will be buying the new one as well
