Well I started college like 2 months ago and they gave me my Macbook. Love it. They also gave me Adobe Creative Design Suite Premium CS4 (my own copy), so I have been a happy little design student.

My wife enrolled in our college yesterday and is going for her bachelors in business management/administration. They only give the Macbooks to design students though. She has been watching me for the past 2 months learn OSX and use it, she loves it too. We are both sick to hell with Windows. I have used it for .. a decade. I am getting a much needed break.

She will be getting this notebook:

Hers will be coming with the Amd Turion CPU though, I think. That is if
we can't talk them into giving her a macbook. Believe me we will.

The HP isn't a bad laptop.. and I suppose is powerful enough for her needs. She has just seen the ease of use and stability I have grown accustomed to with mine, lol. :D Think I will cook her a "didn't get a Mac"
dinner. LOL.

No offense mate, but are you complaining about her not getting the right FREE laptop ? She can still buy a Macbook, but maybe the university thinks a PC fits better her needs... ??

what the hell is with the worlds obsession with off center trackpads !?!?! kfljsdlfja

Anyway, buy one eventually, and just put windows on bootcamp for her. simple

I'm not the only one!

Why don't you buy her a used Macbook off eBay? Then she has the ease and use of OS X and she could probably run Windows of an original C2D Macbook, whilst at the same time not being too expensive. It'll probably be enough power for her too.

You can tell her that if she wants a Mac that bad, ask the school to keep the PC and credit that amount to her student account. You two can then go and spend the extra $300 or so on the MB.

Perhaps the software for her focus is PC-only and the school doesn't want to deal with Virtual machine/parallels/BootCamp support for the issues.

She'll survive with a sort-of FREE Windows machine just fine I'd imagine. You can also remind her that so long as she uses the HP smartly, it'll be just as stable and trouble-free as the MacBook. In my experience Windows machines only run into big issues when malware is involved when it's a day-to-day type machine. My girlfriend's HP laptop was purchased the same time as my Unibody MB and has run flawlessly since the day we got it. Loaded it up with AVG-free virus protection (very low resource consumption and good protection) and it's been perfect. She's also fairly computer savvy when it comes to what sites are legit and what aren't, so that probably helps a fair bit as well.

The idea is to center in on the keyboard (minus num-pad) so you dont have to reach for the trackpad under the right ctrl button.
Ideally the keyboard will be centered in the screen, but some people like an expanded keyboard instead of something basic.

IMO the number pad is not worth the way off center pointing device

Same, I don't know anyone doesn't just move their hand to the trackpad anyway, so why not just center the damn thing? Especially with the tiny trackpads pc's have (I love my massive multitouch trackpad)

I'm really curious to see what school you go to. Granted, I was a liberal arts major, but I never heard of schools giving out free laptops to students. I'm assuming you are going to a private school?

Let's see. Your wife is getting a free notebook. I think all I got was a pile of debt and a couple degrees. My advice, tell your wife to grow up. If you think she needs a MacBook that bad then she can either buy one herself or you can buy one for her. The computer she was given is just fine, even if it's not a Mac.

No offense, but where have you been for the last ten (yes I said ten) years? Or where?

Lots of schools have programs where they supply a "free" laptop. Its by no means the norm, but certainly widely known.

and as a dude that had his windows laptop break down and tried to execute my business using OS X, i am here to tell you, she is probably better off. In my situation, OS X did not fit the bill for me to run my business, but it might work for her.

Walmart is having a deal this weekend for a $300 HP laptop and the specs dont differ too much for that one (if at all there better) and the walmart one comes with windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

Jessica, that was a rude reply. She was by no means "whining" or even griping about not getting one. If you noticed this is a lighthearted situation. In fact it isn't even on that level. All she said was "I hope I can get a mac, because I have seen yours and I like it." She does in fact like the HP and she is excited to even be getting her own computer finally. Also if you will notice, it isn't "me"
that "wants her to get one that bad." As you put it. No offense to you, I just don't think you interpreted my post clearly.

I would buy her a Macbook myself, however that cannot happen because I am unemployed. The job situation is kinda hit and miss at best in my town, in Utah. It is also doubly hard for myself to get a job, because I have an extensive criminal record and recently got released after a 1 year stint in the state prison.

I decided to turn my life around, stay clean, and go back to school. So did she. She is by no means griping, and to quote another user, " I just wanted to see the interesting replies."

I am stoked for her to be getting her own laptop, it's going to benefit her as well as me. (so she won't have to use mine) A lot of colleges give out equipment to students, you just have to find one.

The trackpad... I just noticed it has the off center one! Thanks for pointing that out. I think it would bug me, but she will be fine I am sure. I am also not too worried about windows 7, we qualify for the student upgrade
for 29.99.

Let me just say best of luck with the rest of your life, its already better since you were given a Mac.

Stay strong, stay focussed and all the best to you.

I am really surprised at the number of people who consider this a 'free' laptop. Rest assured they have factored in the cost of the laptop into the tuition and fees that are being charged. Given this, I would certainly want the option of what kind of computer I would be getting.

is this some fancy way of saying she doesn't surf porn sites?

hahahahaha yes and no I suppose. I meant more along the lines of running Ad-Block plus on her FF installation, not clicking on "OMG YOU HAZ A VIRUS!" malware popups or any sort of things like that.

Thanks : ) As for dumping her and going with a fellow design student, hahah can't do. For the poster who was wondering why I am starting college now, what is wrong with that? What exactly was that supposed to mean anyways. I am not from Utah, I was born and raised in Southern California.

I have 2 kids that went to public high school. They were issued free laptops all 4 years. Macbooks at first... then crappy Dell Latitudes.
