How does GoodNotes compare with Notability? What format does it save notes in and can the notes be exported and edited in other apps?
Also, I am looking for OCR functionality... but some year-old reviews say it's not that good.. any updates on this in recent version?
I'd say both are pretty good apps. They've been compared here before.
Because of GoodNotes' iCloud sync problems, I recently decided to give Notability another go. Only to return to GoodNotes, but probably a matter of taste.
A few strictly personal considerations:
Notability
+ Nice filing system (lists instead of notebooks)
+ Vertical scrolling
+ Good palm rejection (I don't have iPad Pro / Pencil)
- limited (and ugly) colour palette
- limited (and ugly) paper templates
- zoombox has about x3 zoom factor, too big (feels like drawing shapes instead of writing)
GoodNotes
+ unlimited colours
+ unlimited paper templates (I share a lot myself on my YouTube chanel ;-)
+ zoombox factor of x 1,5 allows for natural writing, and very natural progress of the zoombox
+ nice interface, stylish tool icons
- iCloud synchronisation unreliable (for many users)
- somewhat outdated notebooks classification
The GoodNotes OCR keeps surprising me, it works extremily well for me.
