This is less a question and more a “is there something wrong with my iPad, or is Google genuinely that awful?” confirmation:

Does the web version of Google Chat genuinely not work on Chrome on an iPad? I’m getting a “Whoops, sorry, Google Chat is not supported on your current browser.” error.

I installed Google Chrome on a new iPad Pro (everything up to date) thinking I’d use it for work without messing up Safari for my S.O. Tried opening up chat only to get that unsupported error. All other Google web apps work, and Chat is fine in Safari, so this makes absolutely no sense. Is something just wrong with my iPad?

And yes, I know I can just use Safari or install the app. I specifically don’t want to do either.

I just tried chat.google.com for the first time on my iPad 11 running iPadOS 18.4.1. I have no one with whom to chat (because we don’t use Google Chat), so I can’t carry it through entirely, but I have received no errors; it looks like it is going to work just fine.

What version of iPadOS are you on? That might be the problem. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for trying that out. I’m also on 18.4.1, and tried this 5 minutes after installing Chrome, so that was clearly up to date as well.

Just to confirm, it worked for you on Chrome, not just Safari? Could be Chrome is messed up on my iPad somehow.

If it's not working, then you can try switching the browser. Additionally, try cleaning the browsing data and signing out of Google Chat.

I downloaded Chrome just now and tried it, and it directed me to use the app rather than letting me use the website. No errors. So maybe there is a problem with your Chrome install. 🤷‍♂️
