Google has confirmed that its Chrome 150 browser update coming later this year will be the last version to support macOS Monterey. Going forward, Chrome 151 and later versions will no longer support macOS 12, which Apple released in October 2021.

In a platform status update, Google says that on Macs running Monterey, Chrome 150 will continue to work, but the browser will display a warning infobar and will not update any further. For new installations of Chrome 151+, macOS 13 or newer will be required.

Google has not announced an exact release date for Chrome 150. But based on the current stable channel being at version 143 and that Google typically releases major new Chrome versions roughly every four weeks, Chrome 150 is likely to be rolled out sometime around mid-2026.

To stay up-to-date with the latest browsing standards and to maintain online security, users on Monterey should update their macOS version, or choose another third-party browser like Firefox that is still receiving updates for their version of macOS.

"APPLE'S PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE! There's no reason my 2016 MacBook should not be able to run Chrome!!"

I guarantee you, without doubt, someone will be posting this on Threads at some point. It'll be planned obsolescene and Apple's fault. Someone will reply agreeing saying that's why they don't buy Apple anything, etc.

And these people attacking Apple for dumb reasons... are they in this room right now?
I mean, surely someone in the whole internet has said and will say that.
But that's a dumb argument you made up (or cherrypicked, at best) to strawman people who complain about Apple's planned obsolescence. Based on other, way more reasonable accusations such as non-repairable and non-upgradable hardware, completely closed ecosystems, mandatory heavy software upgrades...

Another reason to try Linux if chrome is important for you. Everything will be so much smoother.

But must say you will not get sleep mode, fingerprint reader and 5 GHz WiFi on Mac. But speed and playing any games worth it, trust me.

I sell a lot of used 2012-2018 Macs. I always load Firefox on them even if they support chrome.

Is there any actual hardware limitation as to why chrome drops support significantly quicker than Firefox? Just money?
Not hardware limitation but software, as in macOS.

After trying Linux on some Macs, I reverted back to macOS and retired the machines. Linux was just not worth the aggravation for me.

The problem is, what happens when browsers stop supporting Sequoia, which is the last Mac OS version before the low contrast "we don't care if you see your work" change.

Hopefully by then Apple will have to come to the senses and released something better.

The above (above the image in the article) says v150 will both support & not support macOS 12 Monterey, the below (from below the image), provides the correct information. Can the Article please be corrected. i.e. it should read “Going forward, Chrome 151 and later versions …”

But if Firefox can make it work, why can't chrome?

After a certain point, it’s just not worth the effort to support that ever diminishing group of users, and remember, Monterey hasn’t been security updated since 2024. It’s good that Firefox is supporting these old machines, but you shouldn’t be surprised that others don’t.

Presumably Google has a general policy in place re supporting Mac versions - likely for ~5 years.

Telemetry data is also likely telling them rust not many Mac users are on this version anymore too, so they probably feel confident about pulling support for it.

Kudos to Firefox for still supporting it.

It’s not really directly dependent upon the age of the Mac, but more on the age of the macOS version. You’ll notice that Chrome’s support requirements say literally absolutely nothing about Mac hardware specs.

Chrome supports all Macs with macOS versions that are still getting security updates, and continues to support Macs for a couple of years after that. In fact, that’s significantly longer than what Safari supports.
