The Memory Saver feature in the Chrome browser for desktop now features three different modes, including Standard, Balanced, and Advanced. Memory Saver is aimed at speeding up browser performance by limiting the memory that inactive tabs are using.

Standard mode deactivates tabs based on your computer's needs, while Balanced mode considers both browsing habits and the needs of the system. Advanced mode deactivates tabs more quickly after you stop using them. You can select a Memory Saver mode by going to the Settings menu in Chrome and choosing the Performance option.

Google has also added a Performance Detection tool to Chrome. The tool is able to identify potential performance issues that you might have, offering up solutions on how to fix the problem.

To speed up a tab you're using, for example, Google says Chrome will suggest deactivating tabs using extra resources. Chrome users will see a "Performance issue alert" notification, and clicking on the included "Fix now" option will improve browsing. Performance Detection can be disabled in Settings.

Chrome has additional performance controls that can be used to set websites that should always remain active, such as those that need to complete tasks in the background, plus there's an option to turn off visual indicators for inactive tabs.

Is there a "Max ingest" mode for memory management? ;)

Be curious to retry Chrome again, I am a loyal Firefox user on all platforms I really like the option to compile my own copy on older devices, and the great plug-in infrastructure.

Safari is great, but not always a fan of how Webkit handles some sites / web applications.

nice. i can't believe how much ram tabs use these days....for no reason other than ads or pre-emptively downloading linked content?

Why would anyone choose Chrome over Safari?
Because not everyone uses a Mac and a gaming PC with a 4090 and 7950X3D is my primary system, so Chrome it is. Tried Firefox again on my system after ditching it around 10yrs ago, and it's still quite a bit slower than Chrome when it comes to loading regular pages, and this on a 1Gbps connection.

Just going to chime in with the fact that Private Relay will also slow you down a bit in Safari.
I turned that off soon after it came out because it was giving me problems logging into several of my banking accounts. Maybe it’s fixed now, but I haven’t tested it.

These are absolutely pointless features until you consider that Chrome is an ad platform. What is using all those tab resources? The incredibly over the top ads. There's only two things that could be, either ads or a badly behaving heavy web app. This is a problem of their own making.

After the improvements to Safari in Sequoia I actually switched back from Arc. Safari + Stage Manager is actually quite useful on the Mac. I find Stage Manager useless on the iPad but Safari and web apps and Stage Manager is actually a good combination. Great for performance as well.
