Having switched to gigabit ethernet on Mac, I couldn't understand why its download speeds were only 245 whereas on wifi on my iphone it was 800+ down.

Then a Comcast tech came by and said are you logged into Google on Chrome? Yes, I said feeling quite foolish. OK, he said, now try the speedtest on Safari or Firefox. I said I'm sure it will be the same.

Sure 'nuff 800+ down on both Safari and Firefox.

Conclusion: There must be around 500+ down of bandwidth that Google uses to surveil all of us.

Or Chrome has a big in its JavaScript.

Honestly, why ppl use Chrome by choice is a mystery to me.

Your conclusion sounds like you've just worked out that 2+2=1000.

Please don't assume that people in authority are always right because he is clearly wrong. He is so beyond wrong that his job should be in danger from making ridiculous claims like that.

You obviously have an issue with your chrome installation. Rather than inventing conspiracy theories, try to find out the problem.

There's no way that the Chrome issue you experienced is surveillance. warp9 nailed it. Either you have an issue with your Chrome installation or you've encountered some bug on the particular speed test site you're using.

Google's evil is definitely there, but it's far more subtle. I don't use Chrome unless I have to, but when I've had to, I never saw the kind of issue you saw.
