Google Hangouts not working in High Sierra Messages

For years I've connected to Google Hangouts (or whatever it was called beforehand) through macOS Messages.

In High Sierra betas, I haven't been able to. I don't even get a proper error message – when I enter my credentials, the popup vanishes and nothing has changed.

Has Google cancelled Jabber connectivity – what's going on?
