With a direct line to the NSA..woot!

This would have to be in the firmware or next iPhone, since it would be a background app.

It's in the Google Mobile App:

This is exactly what I was hoping for the first time I saw Steve show off the iPhone almost 2 years ago.

Imagine having a family at Disney World with everyone running this software. It would make splitting-up and re-meeting go much smoother!

+1 For meeting friends for a drink. WHERE are they I need bEEEEER!

Of course, iPhone users have to wait, while everyone else gets it automatically. =(

Because the other phones have sucktasitic interfaces and run java which makes it easy for them to develop one app that runs on many phones. (albeit more suck-i-ly.)

Actually even Android devices must wait for an update of the new Google Maps 3.0, so don't feel too bad. I just want to know what Google's definition of "soon" is...

The WinMo version of Google Maps is not Java based.

And it is actually better on WinMo than on the iPhone, as it includes more detailed information on search results, such as restaurant reviews and menus.

Even the UI is quicker, since you can use keys to move between results, instead of always having to zoom in so you can touch closely packed pins.

Your Disney re-meeting idea would only be applicable if you have the 3G version as the 2G phones use cell towers for location services, it's only accurate within miles. The 3G with it's gps is accurate within yards.

How does Apple's penis taste?

Seriously.

Sky Blue, have you tested it and does it work?

It's in Google Mobile App as in Google Mobile App for phones non-iPhones. The picture he posted was of Safari.

+1 for Google making the iPhone win where Apple has failed.

Great article in this mornings Metro about Googles "Spy" in your pocket. Unions are opposed to the software been used to track workers. Wifes will track husbands in the bar and of course Googles poor security record will mean it will be easy to hack.......

Nothing like balanced reporting.

Do they do a Tin Foil Case for the Phone?:D

Yes, these would all be concerns if you didn't have the option of enabling/disabling it. But, you do. So, this is all just a mute point from a paper that needs to sell papers. Furthermore, you can actually have the program lie about your position. Clearly, this function was made for entertainment purposes only.

Maybe so but I sure as hell won't enable it

Why would people want this? I mean, besides help finding someone who WANTS you to find them?

You live in a large city, say NYC -- You can ensure that your wife/husband/child gets to work/class ok.

You live in a smaller town, have a longer commute. You can ensure your wife/spouse get to work safely.

It's a blizzard outside, your car stalls and you're stuck! Someone can now find you with ease.

You owe Joe some money, you can keep tabs on when he is close by to meet up.

You are going for lunch with your friend, but unsure of the exact location , and it's a new place so it's not in Google Maps yet, if your friend is there a few minutes before you -- you can now find the place with ease.

Or perhaps you create a list of things you need to do, such as;

  • Get hair cut
  • Buy milk
  • Go to post office to mail a letter
  • Pay joe $20 for dinner last week

Using this location based technology, we could get a text message sent to us when we are near Joe, or near a post office or near the local grocery store. I now beg the question, WHO WOULDN'T ENABLE THIS
