Google today announced updates to Gemini, the company's AI product that competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Apple Intelligence.

Starting today, Gemini app users can access Google's 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental model, which is trained to break down prompts into a series of steps to improve its reasoning capabilities. The new model shows its reasoning process, giving users insight into why it responds the way that it does.

There is a version of 2.0 Flash Thinking that is able to interact with apps that include YouTube, Search, and Google Maps, with Google working to determine how the new reasoning capabilities can help users do more with Google apps.

An experimental version of Gemini 2.0 Pro is also now available, and Google says it is the best model yet for coding performance and answering complex prompts. Gemini 2.0 Pro is available in Google AI Studio, Vertex AI, and the Gemini app for Gemini Advanced subscribers.

A Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite model is available for Google AI Studio as well, and Google says that it is the most cost-efficient model to date.

Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental and 2.0 Pro Experimental are rolling out to the Gemini web and mobile app. They can be selected in the Gemini dropdown menu when interacting with the AI.

Oh yeah, Google?! Well this week, Apple released a beautiful and magical app to invite people to your spoiled brat child's half-birthday party! With fun pictures and graphics and stuff! You may have heard about it. There were lots of articles.

I use an Android phone, but Alexa is my default assistant, but only because I can use it to turn my coffee machine and heating on before i leave work.

Google today announced updates to Gemini, the company's AI product that competes with OpenAI's ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Apple Intelligence.
And along with this Gemini update is an AI policy change by Alphabet that would now allow their AI to be used for weapons and surveillance systems.

Google: Don't Be Evil

I prefer Gemini for some questions, over chatGPT and Claude.

Still, all this stuff is much less useful than the sellers wish to claim. In the end, if some coder can now produce a million lines of code a week instead of a thousand then I suppose that's an improvement... but for what?

We are already suffering from too many toys.

Siri is going to improve any day now, right?

I’ve only been waiting 10 years.
George R. R. Martin was The Winds of Winter was supposed to be released soon™ a few years back. Still waiting.😑

Some of us remember waiting for Duke Nukem Forever forever only to be disappointed when it was finally released.😒 I have a feeling a smarter Siri will be another Duke Nukem Forever.

Apple Intelligence doesn’t belong in this conversation.
I disabled it after finding it little more than a mild annoyance. It slowed down my Mac notifications and gave me some unhelpful summaries on my phone. Can't say I've noticed anything else. I mapped the action button on my phone to open ChatGpt. Seems to be the best way to have any kind of AI working on the iPhone.

“ … The new model shows its reasoning process, giving users insight into why it responds the way that it does … “
So, that would give more insight into how it constructed a hallucination?

If I was Google, I would avoid the word "Flash." If I recall Abobe flash was little more than a carrier for Malware. Perhaps the AI did not remember the past and is bound to repeat mistakes. I was glad that Apple removed it early on.

I still can't say "Siri call _____" and it call the right person. Apple its ok, lets fix thing down here, let the other kids play with their shinny new toys up there. We just need some sort of "think different" moment, that Apple thing we didn't even know we needed, that would make our lives better. I'm just gonna use the ChatGPT app anyways.

I really wish google had better voice to text systems. The OPENAI model is so good and really convenient when i dont want to type but ramble my question to AI

A slight tangent here but I think it's related to anything Google - private space works well in the default user space in Android 15. Another nice thing pixel/stock android has is multiple users. Please bring private space to multiple users. This is related because, while we can access our alt Google account via private space from inside our default user, while keeping data separation, it'd be nice if we could get the reverse option in multiple users, so that we could access our "default" Google account via private space when logged into our "alt" user space. Would also like to see apple add multiple users and private space to iOS.

Google is really leading in AI race, with various Chinese models probably second close. Apple is distant 4th after Alexa and maybe even fifth after Birsby or whatever Samsung made. It is not as catastrophic as Apple's primary goal is to sell hardware so it is understandable but those VP in charge of Siri should be all fired for incompetence

What is the AI race going towards (in the consumer space) is my question

I've yet to see any business case here at all

Who's going to pay for any of this?

All just ADs again, but this time built into the responses eventually? (gross)

Competes with Apple intelligence is a stretch. In so far as Apple intelligence is capable 🙄.
I glossed over "competes with Apple Intelligence" the first time I read the opening paragraph. When I went back and re-read it, I had to chortle or cackle, not sure which.

or why pretty much none of the "American Inventors" are white.
