Google today announced the launch of two new experimental photography apps on iOS, which are designed to allow the company to test technologies like object recognition, person segmentation, stylization algorithms, efficient image encoding and decoding, and more.

Called "appsperiments," the two apps include "Selfissimo" and "Scrubbies." Selfissimo is an automated selfie app that captures a stylish black and white photo each time you change to a new pose, sort of like a photo booth. The app lets you tap to start a photoshoot, and then it encourages you to adopt different poses. Each time it detects a pause in movement, it snaps a photo.

Scrubbies lets you manipulate the speed and direction of video playback to create video loops of action scenes, funny faces, and replay moments. You can shoot a video directly in the app and then use swipe gestures to remix it.

Scrubbies and Selfissimo can both be downloaded from the App Store for free.

Google has also released experimental apps for Android devices, and, since the company say this is the "first installment" of a series, we can expect additional photography apps to be released in the future.

I notice when scrolling through taken shots I get black screens. Scroll back then forwards and the image appeared.

There are already around a thousand camera apps for iOs. Two more now. Yawn.

I have tested many camera apps and now work exclusively with Apple's Camera. It's amazing how accurately even wobbly taken panoramas are created, which proves how efficiently Apple has written its app. I was extremely enthusiastic after several tests. So, Google: Yawn! Leave the app programming to the professionals!

This is actually pretty cool - just got done using the Selfissimo app. It actually works and will keep going.

Wow the 7 selfies I just took are more than all the selfies I've ever taken... ever. Oh no! I'm becoming one of them :(.

OK, that's pretty dang fun ... !

I kind of dig on the idea of a minimalist app with just some concept they want you to explore (without being littered with UI components).

Keep 'em coming.

after doing some quick tests with selfissimo, i think it may actually be doing something like portrait mode with the photos. i took some selfies with my bookshelf behind me. while taking photos, the titles were clearly readable on the screen, but the resulting photos have a blurred background, where the titles are not readable.

I think you’re right.
