Google location sharing location services arrow not on all the time ?

I haven’t used google location sharing for a while on iOS. But remember the location status icon always being present next to the clock.
I enabled google maps precise location, background refresh on and always for location enabled. Yet the location icon only comes on rarely these days for google maps. Is this something that has perhaps been changed or restricted by Apple recently ? Thanks.
