Google mail not in sync with apple mail, iPad, iPhone

Guys,
I am using an Google apps email address and when mail arrives it arrives on all my 3 devices iMac, iPad, iPhone. Also all the folders show up in all three devices but the mail in each of these folders are not in sync.........for example on the iMac I have 19 emails in the home folder on the iPad I have zero email in the home folder and on the iPhone I have 16.
Any help would be much appreciated
