iPhone 13 mini Google maps hide and seek full screen?

I've got a new iPhone 13 mini, and tonight while using google maps I somehow ended up on a full screen -- and I liked it. No menu or other junk, just pure map.

But I don't know how I ended up there, or how to get back to hit. A short tap on the screen just drops a pin.

Anyone know what the deal is? I'd like to remove the junk more often and get the full screen again, but don't know how.
