Google Maps: navigation doesn't work unless app on screen

anyone know what i can check??? I typically use it for biking, and while the phone is in my pocket i will just listen for turns im supposed to make etc. - but it only tells me navigation if the app is on the screen... anyone know of a setting i can check... thanks!!

(unless I should be using Apple Maps... which even Apple doesn't recommend)

Background refesh should be 'on' for google maps. I faced the same issue some time back and doing this resolved it for me.
