I'm using a 2017 5k iMac, all the latest official updates.

Google maps on Safari is super laggy, slow and hard to use. Even simply panning the non-satellite map is slow. Zooming is extremely sensitive, laggy and hard to control.

The exact same operations using chrome are beautifully smooth, quick and natural as you would expect.

Is something wrong with my safari setup? Or is this normal? Ie chrome is runnig special sauce to make maps run nice on chrome?

Same problem on the retina iMac. GMaps on Safari are horrendously slow.

Don't really understand. Google Maps is a stand alone application that doesn't require or use a browser?

^^^^No, I'm thinking and use Google Maps, as well as Google Earth Pro.

I am using Google Maps for Mac V 1.1, dated back to 2009. It doesn't appear to be supported anymore.

But, it works and I still use it.

I don't believe there is a google maps app for macOS that is supported.

On macOS, google maps is meant to be used inside a browser.

So I just checked google maps on safari on my Mac mini outputting to a HDTV, no lag. It works beautifully.

So is it just a retina thing?

So I guess Apple has no desire to fix it as they have Apple Maps, perhaps Google does?
