Just a noob question - when you use Google Maps for directions, as you drive does your location blue dot move and follow you, so when you go off the screen the map page follows and always displays your current location?

When I use it the map is static when I drive off screen and I need to press the current location button (at the bottom) to move the map to my current location.

Is this the only way it works or am I able to change it?

I think if you press the current location arrow once it will move to your current location, and if you press it again it follows you and trcks your heading too......I think.

Can't try right now, but I seem to recall that while walking, the blue dot did indeed move without me needing to poll its position again.

The directions don't switch to the next when you move, but that's obvious. Maps isn't an turnbased navi after all.

Thanks for that - tested it and it worked!
