Google maps traffic overlay on route

When I'm using the latest google maps app for driving directions, I get the traffic overlay on the whole map except for my route. The chosen route, which is of course exactly where I want traffic information, appears only in grey. Does anyone know how to get the traffic overlaid on the route? I can't just close out directions and go back, because it doesn't save my search terms, and I have to input my route info all over again (which I don't want to do while driving).
