Why on earth would apple add subscription costs and adverts to a core OS feature? I'd be taking my phone back and asking for a refund if they tried that!
As to the original question.. no idea. Possibly. It's not had much in the way of updates, so I'd say it's due some... but then the maps are provided by google, who are now apple's competitor, so they'd probably want the best maps features saved for android. Apple did buy a few mapping companies a good while back, perhaps they've built their own maps software up by now and we'll get something really new?
