An announced update to Google Maps on Thursday brought a partial redesign that aims to make it quicker and easier for users to find places depending on their usage.

As part of the change, Google Maps will now only highlight points of interest that might be relevant depending on what kind of map is selected (driving, navigation, transit, and so on). For example, gas stations will now show up on the navigation map, while train stations will be prominently displayed when viewing the transit map.

Google has also updated the color scheme and added new icons to help users quickly identify exactly what kind of point of interest they're looking at. Places like a cafe, church, museum or hospital now have a designated color and icon, making it easier to find that type of destination on the map.

Google says it will rolling out the changes to all of its products that incorporate Google Maps, including Assistant, Search, and Earth. The new style will also eventually appear in the apps, websites and experiences offered by companies that use Google Maps APIs, in order to provide a consistent experience.

Google Maps can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Google maps not updated for the x rant posts incoming...
But people on here keep saying screw google and how good Apple Maps is, so why does anyone care if Google's (free) apps are optimised for the X or not? It's all very confusing.

Even more than safari and, you know, the actual phone app?

For me it is.

I use Hangouts for phone calls and iCab Mobile for browsing as both are vastly superior.

In fact the only Apple app I use on my phone is iMessage. There is superior software out there for every task, except iMessage. Of course that's because iMessage is locked away from developers.

On ios they should also add the 3D satellite view like they have on web and Apple have in Maps. Too inconvenient having to launch the google earth app just for that.

Been waiting for Google to update maps for the X. I wouldn't have thought it takes so long for a big company with one of top most popular apps to roll out updates. Looking forward to it when it arrives.

Even their betas haven't been updated for the X. Seems it's a ways off.

Things I don’t like about Google apps:
  • They keep asking me to create/log in to a Google account. No. If Google wants my information then they should pay me a percentage of what they make selling it.
  • The reroute feature in maps is usually pretty good, but I just ran into a situation driving to the DFW airport where the system went spastic because it was rush hour. I am not a Dallas native and did not know what routes to avoid, and Google rerouted me thru downtown then tried rerouting every 10 seconds or so. I couldn’t find an off switch and the ignore button didn’t work because a few seconds later a new option was shown. Historical data should be factored into how you are rerouted especially during rush hour.

You probably haven't used Hangouts then, not a pleasant experience, to be delicate.

I don’t mind color changes but going to pastel colors is not a good move for accessibility. I’m color blind and seeing the difference between entertainment/leisure and civil services/worship is going to be difficult.

Google maps is so far ahead of apple maps in my experience. I only wish Apple would allow google maps through CarPlay. It's crap that you're restricted to Apple Maps when in CarPlay.
