Google maps with 9.1

Ever since I upgraded to 9.1, google maps refuses to show me a route unless I'm logged in to an account and turn on search history.

Is this really the direction that Google is headed?

Am I missing a setting somewhere?

Still works the same without any logging in or history just as it did before for me (iPhone 6 on iOS 9.1).
